I like the way this story is written, giving life to the characters and building on the story. I hope you enjoy.

The copyright of this book indicates that this is the second edition. I have to believe that at least some of the reviews written were from the first edition, because the edition I read is well edited and not an obvious translation. IMO there were no glaring errors of grammar and syntax that yanked me out of the story.

Some reviewers complain of too many characters and action switching back and forth between 2 or more disparate locations. For this reader of epic fantasy, including Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time, I had no trouble at all following the 2 different stories and multiple characters. If you've read WOT or GOT and kept those characters straight, you will have no problems following these story lines. The Ilenian Enigma is obviously modeled on epic fantasies such as those mentioned. It is a good first effort, and I will be reading the next book.. As with GOT and WOT, the story most definitely does not end with book 1. The characters are left in peril, and one hopes that the second book begins with a resolution of the immediate danger. Thankfully the subsequent novels are already written, and one does not have to wait for the next one to be published.

True to the genre, the story involves a boy who is ignorant of his true identity, raised in isolation, who is thrust into the larger world through violence. He begins his journey with a trusted companion....there is magic - including artifacts and magical forces, of course a conflict between good and evil, and characters separated by continents but destined to meet. The author is not hesitant to include tragedy and heartbreak. The story is enjoyable and worth reading for fans of the genre.

I believe that many readers will share my opinion when I say that many people enjoy reading books about lost civilizations, lost Atlantis-like worlds and such, especially if those books are written in sort of a mystical tone with a combination of medieval things, like knights, warlocks, mages and princesses. Okay, that was a bit farfetched, but I believe that you understand what I mean. “Marked’’ has all that. It is like reading a book, which is a combination of The Lord of the Rings, Merlin with a bit of Atlantis theme. Also, it is important to say that “Marked’’ is only the first book in the series, which consists of four books altogether, meaning that all events regarding the Ilenian Enigma are written in saga.
What does a good fantasy novel need for it to be good? Well it needs to have a good backstory, a good setting for the story, a good main character and a goal, something that the main character will need to pursue until the very end of it and something that will keep us- readers wanting to read the book from covers to covers. “Marked’’ has all that and it is not just good. It is awesome. It is like playing some cool fantasy/medieval videogame. As the player (or reader) progresses through the game (or the novel) he or she only discovers more and- more things, which only draws him (or her) more into the book.
“Marked’’ is amazing fantasy novel and the best thing is that the book is only the first sequel of the story. I’m looking forward to other sequels. Great story, great main ‘quest’ to follow and great story premises make this book an excellent one.

When I began this story I was immediately drawn in. The author started off with a great action scene involving a wicked assassin and a magician that was trying desperately to defend a small child. Once the scene ended, I was locked in for the rest of the story. A good intro tends to do that for me.

The rest of the book wasn't as good as the intro. Don't get me wrong ... there was plenty of good action scenes that moved the plot forward, keeping me interested until the next one. Unfortunately, the author tended to be wordy in a lot of places, dragging on details that probably didn't need as much detail as they were given. The prose was distracting at some parts, and the book didn't flow as well as it probably could have.

When I finally got to the end I found that I had more questions than answers. There were some serious battles and other things that happened, but at the end of the story the two main protagonists were in trouble, and I got no closure. While that closure will most definitely come in the next book, I was disappointed that the story didn't answer any questions that were raised at the start, and it felt forced.

“In that moment of infinite anguish a strange blue light awoke inside him, emanating from the deepest part of his being. The light started to flicker as if taking on a life of its own. The luminous, dazzling radiance was concentrated in his chest, forming a brilliant circular area like a small lake feeding off his body’s energy.”

Epic fantasies step back for “Marked” is destined to surpass them all as this is the ultimate in fantasy reads, and this is only book one! An amazing tale that captivates the adventurous spirit within us all, leaving readers wanting to read the whole series. Komir arrived as a baby to the Norriel tribe, not knowing who he is and where he came from. The people who took him in have raised him as their own son. However, the Norriel are superstitious people and with the arrival of a strange baby, the death of a foreigner the same day and his parents refusing to tell him anything, there is a lack of acceptance. Komir struggles to find his place not only in his tribe, but also in the world. When fate comes knocking Komir and his only friend, Hartz sets out on an adventure of a lifetime, that not only includes magical elements, mysteries, myths and legends, but a whole lot more. Readers will find there is more than enough to this amazing story to keep any fantasy lover entertained and breathlessly immersed within its pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Alternate Universe!
Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2017
Marked is a wonderful fantasy novel and the first in The Ilenian Enigma by talented writer, Pedro Urvi. Nineteen-year-old Komir, a young warrior from the mountains of Tremia, has always wondered about his origins, despite the love and affection of his parents, Ulvis and Mirta. The people of Orrio have always considered Komir to be an outcast and have steered clear of him. With the Ceremony of the Bear, a coming of age ritual that will transform him into a full warrior, Komir hopes that the villagers of Orrio will finally accept him as their own. What Komir doesn’t realize is that with his initiation into adulthood, as symbolized by the Ceremony of the Bear, he is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime that will truly make him the man he wants to become…The author, Urvi, creates a wonderful, mystical alternate universe in Marked; one that is chock full of romance, intrigue and, of course, magic. What makes the book so well-written is the fact that Urvi manages to keep his readers engaged throughout the story by keeping the events exciting yet relateable. A great book overall and a terrific start to what will undoubtedly be a terrific series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story, wonderful characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 17, 2017
A friend recommended Pedro Urvi’s The Ilenian Enigma saga to me as I was looking for another Epic saga series to read, and Marked is the first book. I’m so very glad I was told about it.

It has a compete fantasy feel, which is full and vivid. It has a whole new land and map set, with a map included. There’s a plethora of well described characters who really come to life. The interactions between them are well written, although at times, with such a wide cast of characters, it’s slightly confusing to work out which point of view you’re reading. This doesn’t happen very often, and it only takes a second, so I didn’t lose the story at all.

It tells of Komir and Hartz and Komir’s hero quest. Komir is a very likable hero, partly because he doesn’t see himself as a hero, and partly because he’s 19 and there’s almost a coming of age feel to his story. His story is set against a backdrop of a wider story of the continent of Tremia, and the three kingdoms that are warring for the power over all of it. It’s filled with fantasy, intrigue, murder, magic, battles and love. So it’s got something for everyone.

Sometimes the writing can seem a little off, but Marked was not originally written in English, and it seems like during translation some phrases and sentences just don’t read as well as they would have in the original Spanish. It doesn’t take anything away from the story, but it meant that I read a few sentences over again to get the gist.

Overall, I have to say that I loved this book. It has reminders of some other epic fantasy series, but it has such a unique story and wonderful characters. I absolutely can’t wait to continue the series and find out the ending. Marked leaves you with some big questions that can only be answered by reading the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Medieval Fantasy Novel
Reviewed in Canada on February 7, 2017
Marked: (The Ilenian Enigma, Book 1) written by Pedro Urvi is a medieval fantasy novel involving warlocks, mages, princesses, and knights. I love this genre and thought that the author’s plot line was very intriguing. I found that although the story line and character descriptions are wonderful. There were many characters and points of view that the story switched between, because of this, I found it hard to keep up with which story line I was reading about. Overall the book had a good plot, great fantasy included in each character’s story line, and the description of the world the reader is entering while reading, were excellent. I did enjoy the book, but I found that there could be some edits made to make this novel more enjoyable, such as having less characters, maybe by putting their stories into other books? I know this is the first of 4 novels, and I am looking forward to reading the following books in the future. I would love to know more about the child from the snow storm, as I had many unanswered questions about him, but all the other characters had a very good background, descriptions and I loved the humor that was included by a few of the characters. I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys medieval fantasy.
