A Rock 'n' Roll Lovestyle: Will the Sound of Music lead to the sound of love? (The Lovestyle Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 196 ratings

An independent woman not interested in love. A reclusive rock star not capable of love.
Can they make sweet music together? Or will his past bring discord to both of their lives?

A beautiful romance which sweeps from the enchanting fresh, snow-capped mountains of Austria in winter to the summer-warm cobbled streets of Venice and Verona in this glorious story of love and revenge.

Sukie McLaren has three loves - her career, her cats and The Sound of Music - so when she's sent to Salzburg on a business trip in December, it's like all her dreams have come true. She's not looking for love, she's just looking for the Doh-Ray-Me steps, a problem called Maria and lots of Christmas markets against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains.

Pete Wallace is the world’s Number One, best-selling, male solo artist. He's also a reclusive, reluctant, rock-star preparing to go on tour again after shunning the limelight for three years. Deeply scarred by past events, he can't fall in love.

The sparks - and quips - fly when Pete and Sukie first meet but her feisty, no-nonsense attitude soon wins him over and amidst much fun and laughter, their friendship grows.

Unfortunately, Pete's past could be about to rear its ugly head and jeopardise this blossoming love affair.

How strong does love need to be to overcome the past?

About the Author

Hi there, Lovely to meet you. I'm Kiltie Jackson. I spent my formative years growing up in Glasgow but when I was old enough to do so, I high-tailed it down to London. I spent thirteen wonderful years in the Big Smoke before relocating once more - this time to the Midlands. Those London years gave me many interesting experiences, many of which are now finding their way into my novels. I now live in Staffordshire with one grumpy husband and five cats who kindly allow us to share THEIR house. We're allowed to stay as long as we keep paying the mortgage! Our little home is known as Moggy Towers - plenty of moggies but no towers! I like reading, watching movies, and eating things I shouldn't! I really dislike going to the gym! I'm hoping that one day I can give up the day job and write my stories for a living. You can follow me on Facebook - www.facebook.com/kiltiejackson or on Twitter - www.twitter.com/KiltieJackson

Kiltie Jackson spent her childhood years growing up in Scotland. Most of these early years were spent in and around Glasgow although for a short period of time, she wreaked havoc at a boarding school in the Highlands.

By the age of seventeen, she had her own flat which she shared with a couple of cats for a few years while working as a waitress in a cocktail bar (she’s sure there’s a song in there somewhere!) and serving customers in a fashionable clothing outlet before moving down to London to chalk up a plethora of experience which is now finding its way into her writing.

Once she’d wrung the last bit of fun out of the smoky capital, she moved up to the Midlands and now lives in Staffordshire with one grumpy husband and another six feisty felines.

Her little home is known as Moggy Towers even though, despite having plenty of moggies, there are no towers! The cats kindly allow her and Mr Mogs to share their home as long as the mortgage continues to be paid.

Since the age of three, Kiltie has been an avid reader although it was many years later before she decided to put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – to begin giving life to the stories in her head. Her debut novel was released in September 2017 and her fourth book was a US Amazon bestseller in Time Travel Romance.

Kiltie loves to write fiery and feisty female characters and puts the blame for this firmly on the doorsteps of Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables and George Kirrin from The Famous Five.

When asked what her best memories are, Kiltie will tell you:

1. Queuing up overnight outside the Glasgow Apollo to buy her Live-Aid ticket.

2. Being at Live-Aid.

3. Winning an MTV competition to meet Bon Jovi in Sweden.

(Although, if Mr Mogs is in earshot, the latter is changed to her wedding day.)

Her main motto in life used to be “Old enough to know better, young enough not to care!” but that has since been replaced with “Too many stories, can't type fast enough!”

Kiltie Jackson’s A rock n roll love style

I’m not going to lie I had a hard time getting into this book at first, along with other books lately and I realized it’s because I read a lot of series so I know a majority of the characters already, I don’t need to take the time to get to know them, thanks to some FB groups and Goodreads I have opened up to lots of new authors and therefore new characters and have learned that I need to take the time to get to know. Once I realized this it opened the window to this fantastic novel!

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Sukie and Pete along with the others and following their story which was so much deeper than I thought it would be. This is not a fluffy romance novel. I was invested in them and really wanted it to work out in the end and as I got deeper into the book I could not put it down. When I’m reading while washing dishes you know it’s a good one! I want to be friends with Sukie and Pete and play trivial pursuit on a snowy day!

The truly amazing part for me was the detailed description of Austria and the mountains, snow and all of the landscapes and everything around The Sound of Music. I felt like I was dancing through the glass gazebo singing “ when your 16 going on 17”. I want to plan a trip and go visit and drink cocoa and stay in a fabulous hotel and shop and walk and experience everything Sukie did. Sukie is strong and iIndependent but she is also human and fragile; funny, smart kind and understanding. It is not easy to be all of those things in today’s society and these women do exist not jut in books!

Kiltie is an extremely talented writer that keeps a book moving and gives you plenty of detail with out going overboard, and honest emotions. She sucks you in like your the characters friends hearing them tell you about their life. Thank you!

What a cute, well-rounded romance. I don't read romance very often, but I think this was a great one. I'm usually pretty critical of self-published books because they tend to skimp on utilizing editors, and while there are still a few issues I noticed, it didn't have typos or other amateur-hour problems that I've seen other self-published works have, which means it was reviewed with a fine-toothed comb at least a few times and I appreciate that.

What I loved:
-The MC is hotheaded, but in a believable way. I've read some female protagonists with a temper that I just could not understand. Sukie was sincere and flawed. I loved that about her. I'll also say this is the first time in a long time that I've read from a perspective of someone who didn't second-guess herself or is consumed with anxiety. As someone who lives with anxiety every day, it was refreshing and a little jarring to be in her head.
-There's no insta-love. Thank god. The romance really builds.
-There's more going on than just romance. Other forms of relationship grow and develop and that makes the book feel much more relatable.
-The love interest is sweet and flawed. I liked him loads.
-The meet-cute is delicious *kisses fingers*

What I didn't love:
-Lots of characters and perspectives, without any stylistic difference between them. The reader quickly jumps from one character's mind to another's without any change in font, a subheading, or other stylistic indicator. That felt clumsy to me. Also there were times where that perspective jump wasn't necessary.
-Mild spoiler for the HEA moment in the spoiler tag. I know some people want to know next to nothing going in, so I'll put it in the tag, but I don't consider this to be a huge spoiler, but like, here's fair warning anyways... <spoiler> The MC is pregnant at the end of the story, and I kinda felt pissed off about that?? Like she's an independent woman in her 30s who LOVES her independence and has never voiced in this story even an inkling of interest in having children.. I felt like I was supposed to be happy for her because this is how romances are meant to end, but I kinda felt like it was a betrayal of her character. I would have much rather seen the romance end with them at home comfortably sipping hot chocolate in the snow, or have had some idea that she wanted kids at any point in the story. </spoiler>
-Vague descriptor of the villain in the spoiler tag. Again, not a major spoiler IMO, <spoiler> The villain's descent into madness was a bit too cheesy. Like it didn't feel all that real. He was basically just an abusive jerk up until then and then BOOM he's crazy. I didn't buy it. But I could also sense a real effort on the author's part to make me buy it, which I found endearing, if that makes any sense. </spoiler>

All that is to say, it had its flaws, but was still an excellent story and very fun to read. I don't usually read lots of Christmas stories in the season, but I'm glad I squeezed this one in!!

This book was better than I expected. I went in thinking it would be a cheesy holiday romance that wouldn't leave a lasting impression on me. Instead, I was wrapped up in the well-written story and complex characters that just happen to exist within the Christmas season. Sukie and Pete were adorable in this slow burn but exciting romance. I loved it.

Girl meets rock star/movie star/celebrity in unlikely circumstances. Been done before, right? Well, cast aside your preconceptions because this book takes a familiar storyline and gives it an almighty shake (a bit like the snow globe in the story).
From the start I adored the feisty and fiercely funny Sukie. A career woman in her thirties, she stands for no nonsense. When she meets reluctant and prickly rock star, Pete, in Austria they initially circle each other warily, not helped by the fact that Pete's protective manager/surrogate father, Jordie, suspects Sukie of ulterior motives. Gradually, the duo build a friendship that is wholly believable and enlivened by their constant, albeit good-natured, jibes at each other.
Throw into the mix a cast of well-rounded and credible characters, including Sukie's mum, Beth, and best friend, Elsa, devastated by her husband's death, and you have a tale that simply flows and fills you with the feel-good factor. Although – just to add some darkness to plot – there's someone with a massive grudge against Pete who also happens to be a tiny bit unhinged …
The author paints a beautiful picture, both of the stunning Austrian scenery and how relationships develop, often against the odds. I often balk at books of a 'certain length', but I had no problems powering through this one. A truly delightful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly enjoyable!

Loved the storyline and the characters were so much fun and likeable. I enjoy the way the main characters banter back and forth as they slowly and unknowingly fall in love. There were sub stories written in the story and revenge was the main course! My only complaint was that it sometimes got much too wordy when describing such things as a room or entire home.

Altogether a good story well written!

Can I keep you?

I certainly will keep this book in my mind for a very long time and in my heart probably forever. What helped this book to take my heart would have to be the main character Sukie, independent, strong woman with amazing sense of humour and no filter to her mouth. For me this is the character that would win anyone over if it’s in the book or in the real life. Her witty responses and jokes made me giggle on many ocasions, I could only imagine I would just stand there and try, poorly try to give some good comeback. But not only that, she was also good hearted, understanding and with clever head on her shoulders.

Opening this book, I thought I knew what I’m in for, romantic comedy set in winter/Christmas time. Your typical girl meets the rock star type of book, but it only took few chapters to realize there is also more to that. There is a dark story lurking in the back and it makes you just wait and worry in back of your mind.

The biggest part of the book is set in Salzburg, beautiful city with amazing mountains covered in snow surrounding it. Just closing my eyes I could see it all and so vividly, author managed to show you everything you needed to see through her writing style and I bet it would make even summer lover fall in love with winter snowy setting of Austria. It certainly worked for me. Sound of the music movie played a big part in this book too, as Sukie being ‘little bit’ obsessed with it has always dreamed to visit Salzburg. She is so excited and so unbelievably happy that it made me to finally watch it and now I understand why. It’s absolutely beautiful, just like this book.

Without revealing any more I think you should go and check it out, read it and make your own mind up but be prepared to fall in love, laugh out loud and possibly shed few tears too. Just what you need from a great book I guess.

Auf Wiedersehn!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun cozy romance
Reviewed in Italy on April 11, 2018
Sukie is a feisty woman who stands for no nonsense. Pete is a famous rock star used to getting his own way. When the two meet up by chance, it's an interesting encounter, to say the least. There are a lot of secondary characters in this book, but each one fits in very well and there is some great interaction between them.
This is a fun, cozy romance that will take you away from the real world for a while and lose yourself on the streets of Salzburg, with a backdrop of mountains and the Sound of Music. A book that can be read at any time of the year, and will leave you with a warm feeling in your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amusing and catching book

Reading ‘A Rock’n’Roll Lovestyle’ was great fun. It has an appealing humour and Sukie, the main character, is such a nice person that I would like to meet her in real life. The only ‘downer’ is that I found it impossible to stop reading and get some work done.

5.0 out of 5 stars S well-crafted slow burn
Reviewed in Australia on November 16, 2020
Kiltie Jackson weaves together several captivating stories in this slow-burn multi-narrative. Sukie is a heroine to champion and her love interest (no spoilers) a redeemable grouch who finally meets his (perfect) match. They are surrounded by a quirky, but wonderful cast of supporting characters. The first in the series and looking forward to reading more.
